EB to receive $209 million for three Virginia-class subs

Groton — Electric Boat has received a $209 million contract modification to purchase parts with long lead times for three Virginia-class submarines.

The Navy awarded the funding for a second Virginia-class submarine in fiscal 2014, SSN 793, and two Virginia-class submarines in fiscal 2015, SSN 794 and SSN 795.

The Navy began buying two submarines per year in 2011 but was considering not purchasing the second Virginia-class submarine in 2014 because of fiscal constraints.

The president’s proposed budget called for building one Virginia-class submarine in 2014 instead of two and two submarines in 2018 instead of one to save money, but Congress supported restoring the funding for the SSN 793.

With this contract modification, the overall contract is worth $595 million.

The parts that will be funded include steam and electrical-plant components, main propulsion unit and ship-service turbine generator sets, and miscellaneous hull, mechanical and electrical-systems components to support construction of the submarines, according to EB.
