Norwich – Norwich Public Utilities is repeating a warning to customers about a phone scam from callers claiming to represent the utility and asking for payment in order to avoid utility service termination.

The calls seem to be targeting local businesses, but all customers should be aware of this scam.

Most recently, the caller has informed the customers they are behind in their utility payment and provides instruction on how to purchase a “money pack” -- a reloadable debit card -- with a specific confirmation number.

The caller claims the card will be used to make a payment to prevent their utilities from being shut off.

NPU recommends customers receiving phone calls from anyone claiming to represent NPU should ask for the caller’s name and a phone number to call back and verify the call is legitimate, especially if the caller is requesting any form of payment. Do not provide any financial information, including credit card numbers, or send any payment by mail to someone claiming to be a utility employee without first verifying the call is valid.
