Stonington to celebrate its new artificial turf football field

Stonington - A ceremony will be held on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the high school to celebrate the completion of the new artificial turf football field.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will take place before the girl's varsity field hockey game. It will be the first varsity game played on the field.

The rededication of the field will be held before the first home football game on Oct. 11.

Donald Palmer Field features alternating panels of light and dark green turf and has a large "S" at the 50-yard line. It has been designed to also host field hockey, soccer and lacrosse games as well as youth sports.

It is part of $2.7 million renovation of the high school athletic fields. Work will also be done to renovate the softball, boys soccer, field hockey and multipurpose fields.
