Ledyard committee moving forward with police, school building projects

Ledyard — The Municipal Building Committee continued to make small strides Monday night toward the completion of two major projects: a new police facility and the renovation of Ledyard Middle School.

The committee voted to finalize the interior design requirements on the $6.75 million police facility, which residents approved at the budget referendum in May based on plans by Jacunski Humes Architects. The committee voted to hire the same firm this fall, and committee Chairman Pete McIntyre said the 12,130-square-foot plan has changed very little since approval at the polls.

Bond authorization was also approved this spring, and bonding will proceed incrementally as bills for the construction begin to come in.

The committee also voted to support a new demographic population study of the town’s school district, which will include enrollment projections. This data is required for submission of the school building proposal to the state so that the town can be eligible for state reimbursement and will also paint an updated picture of classroom space needs for the architects.

This project — originally a $45 million renovate-as-new plan with a 62 percent state reimbursement — was originally slated to be on the May ballot, but the Town Council scrapped it after the high cost raised eyebrows. The committee selected Hamden-based firm Silver/Petrucelli & Associates to move forward with round two of the facilities improvement project, which will also include the closure of one of the town’s elementary schools and a possible addition on another.

Town councilor and Finance Committee Chairman Mike France said the reimbursement rate has since decreased, though the exact number won’t be set until next year.

Municipal Building Committee Chairman Pete McIntyre said an optimistic time line would put the demolition of the old firehouse and ambulance buildings adjacent to Town Hall — where the location of the new facility is planned — sometime in March.
