Three Norwich aldermen will not seek re-election

Norwich — The City Council will have at least three newcomers following the Nov. 3 election, as three incumbents announced they will not seek re-election.

Veteran Republican Alderwoman Sofee Noblick and first-term Democrats Terell Wilson and William Eyberse all said they will not run for re-election. Noblick is completing her third two-year term on the council.

Democratic Aldermen Francois “Pete” Desaulniers, the council president pro tempore, and Mark Bettencourt both said they plan to seek the party endorsement in July to run. Both are completing their fourth terms on the council. Bettencourt, however, was off for two years after he unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 2009.

Republican Alderman William Nash said he remains undecided and plans to speak with constituents and supporters before announcing whether to run again.

Noblick, a local landlord, said Monday she has “put in a lot of time” in her council work and served with three mayors and three city managers. She said she plans to spend more time with her family and pursue other interests.

Wilson said he learned a lot during his first term, but work and plans to start a family will take precedence. Eyberse said he, too, wants to concentrate on other interests.

The announcements did not surprise the two party town committee chairmen, who are actively seeking candidates to fill the November municipal election slate.

Democratic Town Committee Chairman Larry Goldman said other candidates have expressed interest, including former Alderman H. Tucker Braddock. Democrats Elanah Sherman and Samuel Browning have announced plans to run.

Republican Town Committee Chairman Peter Nystrom — former alderman, mayor and long-time state representative — said potential candidates have approached him as well. Nystrom said he could not identify them because they have not made their intentions public yet. Nystrom said he is not planning to run for council.

Norwich Democratic Mayor Deberey Hinchey is in the middle of a four-year term.

The Republican Town Committee will hold its endorsement caucus on July 22. Nystrom said any Norwich registered Republican interested in running for council or Board of Education should contact him prior to the caucus by calling (860) 608-2165.

The Democratic caucus will be held July 23. Goldman would like candidates to contact him by the end of June to receive a questionnaire being sent to all candidates for the town committee’s consideration. Contact Goldman at (860) 887-1298.
