Fatality reported in head-on crash in Ledyard
Ledyard — State police said one person was killed and another person suffered serious injuries in a head-on crash Thursday on Route 12 at North Glenwoods Road, in the Gales Ferry section of town.
Police and fire crews from the Gales Ferry and Ledyard fire departments were called to the scene at 5:41 p.m.
Gales Ferry Fire Chief Anthony Saccone said the drivers of the two vehicles, a man and a woman, were both trapped in their vehicles due to the severity of the accident and the extent of the damage.
Firefighters used hydraulic tools during an extended operation to free the drivers. There was one occupant in each vehicle.
The woman was taken by Ledyard Ambulance to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich. The man was flown by LifeStar helicopter to an unknown hospital.
Route 12 was closed for more than three hours. A state police accident reconstruction unit was working to determine the cause of the crash.
A state police spokeswoman confirmed the fatality late Thursday but provided no further information.
