The next play at Montville High School should be familiar to most movie buffs and board game players, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be an element of mystery in the show.

The school’s drama club will perform a stage version of the 1985 movie mystery comedy “Clue,” based on the board game of the same name.

The school’s production takes inspiration from both the film and the board game, according to Montville High School English teacher Susan Walsh, who directs the play.

“It’s a cult classic, the movie ‘Clue,’ and a lot of people grew up with the board game,” Walsh said.

    The cast will put on six performances, at 7 p.m. March 10 and 11; 2 and 7 p.m., March 12; and 7 p.m., March 18 and 19.

Walsh rewrote the movie’s screenplay into a script for the play, and helped design a set with three separate platforms that mimic the different parts of the game.

All the familiar characters are there — “Professor Plum is in plum, Mr. Green is in green, Scarlett is in a red dress,” Walsh said.

The cast includes several seniors who will take the stage with the drama club for the last time next week.

Walsh said it’s a sentimental moment, but she has high hopes for the next few years of Montville High actors.

“The freshman are so utterly talented,” she said. “I’m so fortunate. Every year people say, ‘aren’t you going to miss the seniors?’ And I say, ‘look at my freshman!’”

The senior club members have played their own parts well, she said.

“Sometimes they have senioritis. ... but they really see themselves as passing the torch,” she said.

Walsh and the stage crew have incorporated many of the memorable scenes from the original movie into their production, but much of the adaptation was left to the actors, she said.

“I’m encouraging the actors to be very big and broad,” she said. “The subtleties of the film get lost on stage, and ... these characters are even be bigger than what they’ve seen.”

Tickets will be sold at the door and cost $10 for students and seniors and $15 for adults.
