Coast Guard cadets win spelling bee

A team of freshman cadets from the Coast Guard Academy won the Waterford Education Foundation’s annual spelling bee April 8.

Valentina Whelan, Ayleen Brewer, and J.L. Benton were the first team from the academy to participate in the spelling bee, which is in its ninth year. Eight teams of adults and students sponsored by local organizations and companies competed for the trophy.

The Waterford Education Foundation raises money for grants for Waterford’s schools and library to support educational activities that complement classroom instruction.
