Farmers' market openings set in New London, Groton
The Field of Greens Farmers’ Market will open its 2016 season at two locations in New London and a new location in Groton on July 1, 5 and 6.
The Friday market at Williams Park at the corner of Williams and Broad Street in New London will open from 3 to 6 p.m. July 1.
A new Tuesday market at Washington Park in the City of Groton will open from 3 to 6 p.m. July 5 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Wednesday market at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital on Montauk Avenue in New London will open from 3 to 6 p.m. July 6.
For sale at the markets will be locally grown, farm fresh fruits and vegetables and a variety of plants, cheeses, artisan breads and baked goods, eggs and meats, jams and pickles, honey and syrups, among other items.
Local farms participating in this year’s market include: Cold Spring Farm, Smith’s Acres, Collins Farm, and Deep Roots Farm, Whepittituck Farm, Sun Stone Farm, Farmstead Herbs and Goods Farm and Whittle’s Willow Spring Farm.
The markets also will feature local artists, food vendors, musicians and authors.
Cooking demonstrations and samplings will be offered by a variety of local chefs and dieticians.
“Farmers markets provide a great place to taste and buy the freshest fruits and vegetables in New London County and our internship program, farm to fork program, Latino Ambassador and bus for seniors make us unique,” Cindy Barry, market promotion coordinator with Ledge Light Health District, said in a news release.
“It’s also a place that everyone can access farm fresh fruits and vegetables, as we take WIC and Senior Coupons and EBT/SNAP," she said. "We’re very proud of that.”
Ledge Light, in partnership with Thames Valley Sustainable Connections, will also offer two special events at this summer’s markets:
Family Day on July 26 at Washington Park and July 29 at Williams Park, both from 3 to 6 p.m., will feature puppet shows, books, seed plantings and other activities for children and their families.
Senior Day on Aug. 23 at Washington Park and Aug. 26 at Williams Park, both from 3 to 6 p.m., will feature demonstrations of leisure activities such as basket weaving, tai chi and photography, and information on services for seniors.
Seniors are encouraged to contact the New London and Groton Senior Centers to arrange transportation to the markets.
Residents are encouraged to sign up for the weekly newsletter, which will announce weekly events, give nutrition information and recipes and list weekly produce expected at the market.
