Aquarion purchases 75 acres next to reservoir in Stonington
Stonington — Aquarion Water Co. announced Tuesday that it has signed a contract with the Calve Family Corp. to purchase 75 acres adjacent to its Deans Mill Reservoir for $225,000.
The reservoir is located off Deans Mill Road and Route 234.
When the sale is complete in December, the land will be classified as Class 1 and Class 2 watershed land by the state Department of Public Health, the water company said in a news release.
“Our commitment to providing our customers with high quality water starts with our proactive approach to protect source water and conserve natural resources,” said Charles Firlotte, president and chief executive officer of Aquarion. “Our purchase of the Calve property will allow us to further protect this finite resource and the surrounding land for the benefit of our customers in the area.”
Water from the property flows into Aquarion’s Deans Mill and Palmer reservoirs, which supply water for customers in Mystic and Stonington.
“Aquarion has a proven track record across the state of protecting its reservoir and groundwater supplies by managing over 20,000 acres of land,” First Selectman Rob Simmons said. “We are confident that this land purchase will enhance our water supply for everyday use and fire protection.”
