Girl Scout Troop #63632, composed primarily of fourth graders from Lyme Consolidated School, has installed a Little Free Library in the courtyard of the Lymes Youth Service Bureau. A formal dedication will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 23.

Little Free Library is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing the love of reading through neighborhood book exchanges. Visitors can take a book or leave a book to share.

Last fall, the Juniors troop voted to approve the project. It set aside profits from the annual cookie sale to design, build, install and maintain the Little Free Library at the LYSB, where its meetings are held.

Because the LYSB is located in the village of Old Lyme, the troop also had to get permission from the Historic District Commission. Members Chloe Datum and Ava Gilbert presented the design, which was drafted by architect Christopher Arelt, father of troop member Emma Rose Arelt.

Materials were donated by Ring’s End in Niantic, and the installation was by master carpenter Gary Lankerd of Waterford.

The troop will be submitting the Little Free Library project for the Girl Scouts Bronze Award, the highest honor for a Junior.
