Eagle Scout candidate helps with flag disposal

Troop 9 Pawcatuck Eagle Scout candidate Ian Whewell of Pawcatuck has created two receptacles for residents to deposit unserviceable American flags for dignified disposal.

One of the deposit sites is at Stonington Town Hall on Elm Street while the other is at Harley P. Chase VFW Post 1265 on Route 1 in Pawcatuck.

At Town Hall, a freestanding wooden container in the entrance hall is decorated with an American flag. At the VFW, citizens can deposit their unserviceable flags in a slot on the left side of the building.

Flags are considered unserviceable when they are worn, torn or soiled, or when the colors are no longer vivid.

The flags will be collected and properly retired by Troop 9. The flags are cut into quarters, while blue fields with stars are left intact because the union should never be broken.
