On thin ice
Emerson MacDonald and Austin Menta, not shown, of the Washington Trust Community Skating Center in Westerly use a fire hose connected to a tanker truck to spray water to build up ice around the coolant tubes of the rink on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017. With each pass of the hose a quarter of an inch or less of ice builds up and the number of passes they can make in an hour depends on the temperature.
They started the process two evenings last week and Tuesday the ice should be thick enough over the coolant tubes that they can complete making the ice by using the Zamboni ice resurfacing machine. The rink will be open for the season Friday, Nov. 17.
