Norwich — The Norwich Salvation Army is short by 40 turkeys to fill Thanksgiving meal baskets for its more than 100 families.

Lt. Cheryl McCollum, commander of the Norwich Salvation Army, said she requested 150 turkeys from the agency’s usual distributor, but received only 70. She has funds to purchase some turkeys to fill part of the void, but cannot make the entire goal.

McCollum is reaching out to local banks, businesses and the public in an effort to fill the need by Friday. The agency’s client families are scheduled to collect their holiday meal baskets on Monday. Individuals who also receive services from the agency will not receive turkeys, but will be invited to select holiday food items, including any leftover turkeys or chickens from the agency’s freezer.

Anyone wishing to donate turkeys can bring them to the Norwich Salvation Army, 169 Franklin St., Norwich, during extended office hours this week, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 3 to 5 p.m. through Friday. Call the office at (860) 889-2329 or McCollum directly at (860) 478-8276.
