Vaccines distributed in Norwich, tuberculosis tests in Montville may be ineffective

An audit of vaccines and tuberculosis tests done at several Hartford HealthCare-run health centers, including ones in Norwich and Montville, showed that they may not have been stored at temperatures recommended by their manufacturers and could be ineffective.

The mistake would not cause any harm to people who received the vaccines or tests, but could reduce their effectiveness. Hartford HealthCare is contacting the affected patients and will provide a second vaccine or tuberculosis test for free.

During an audit, Hartford HealthCare staff found the possible temperature fluctuations at its locations providing flu, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, pneumococcal, hepatitis B and meningococcal vaccines in five places, including The Backus Hospital Family Health Center in Norwichtown.

They also found that tuberculosis tests in five places, including a primary care office on Norwich's West Main Street and the Montville Backus Health Center, may have been kept at the wrong temperature.

A news release from Hartford HealthCare said the company is re-educating its staff at all its locations, will record temperatures daily and complete a monthly review. It also will conduct periodic on-site vaccine storage audits, standardize digital temperature data recorders and research technology for central monitoring system with real-time alerts.
