New London renews contract for sidewalk work

New London — The City Council on Tuesday waived its bidding process and approved an extension of the contract with Colonna Concrete & Asphalt Paving for $1 million worth of work throughout the city in 2018.

The work is expected to include sidewalks, concrete aprons, stone curbing and storm drainage improvements. The funding for the projects will come from a capital improvement bond ordinance approved by the City Council in March.

Colonna has been performing work in the city since 2014, the last time there was a competitive bid for the sidewalk work. A stipulation in the initial contract was that the city had the unilateral right to renew the contract if Colonna was willing to hold to its 2014 unit price.

The company is charging $8.25 per square foot for concrete sidewalk, $44.00 per linear foot for new granite curbing and $25 per square foot to reset granite curbing.

The council voted 6-1 on the renewal of the contract with councilor John Satti voting against.
