Norwich group, schools to host suicide prevention event Saturday

Norwich — The Norwich Prevention Council and three local high schools are hosting a suicide prevention and awareness event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Fontaine Field on Mahan Drive in Norwich across from Kelly Middle School.

This event will be held following weeklong efforts in the three high schools to educate students about suicide prevention and resources in the community to address mental health. Norwich Free Academy, Norwich Regional Technical High School and Three Rivers Middle College are participating.

This annual event began six years ago and is aimed at bringing the community together to “Take the First Step” and start the conversation in Norwich about suicide awareness and prevention. Local service providers and wellness advocates will attend to provide support and resources for individuals and loved ones impacted by mental health and suicide.

A walk along the track will begin with a silent lap to bring awareness to those lost to suicide. Attendees will have the opportunity to wear color beaded necklaces that signify their personal connection with suicide and walkers will receive a card to track the distance they walk to earn raffle tickets for walking laps.

This is a rain or shine, family friendly event that will include music, face painting, hooping and movement demonstrations, reiki and massage. Local providers from EMPS Crisis Intervention, Adult Mobile Crisis, Reliance Health, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Natchaug Hospital will be in attendance. If it rains, activities other than the walk will be held indoors at the Rose City Senior Center next door on Mahan Drive.

The Norwich Police Department will collect unused or expired medications for safe disposal in recognition of National Drug Take Back Day.

There is no fee to participate in the walk. Donations will be accepted and used to raise awareness about suicide prevention. Light snacks and water will be available for walkers.
