Preston residents to consider new elementary school bleachers

Preston — A special town meeting will be held Thursday to seek residents’ approval to use up to $35,000 in capital bond funds remaining from the replacement of the gym floor at Preston Veterans’ Memorial School to replace the bleachers in the gym.

The town meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the school gym, 325 Route 165.

Residents approved spending up to $118,000 to replace the gym floor as part of a Feb. 6 referendum on the $3.56 million, five-year capital plan.

The new gym floor was installed during April vacation and cost $81,000. School officials asked to use up to $35,000 of the remaining funds to replace the bleachers with new ones that better meet the federal handicapped accessibility law, Board of Finance Chairwoman Melissa Lennon said.

If approved, the new bleachers would take six to eight weeks to order and could be installed this summer.
