Out and About: First Friday in Norwich an oasis of art, conviviality

Sign at Reliance Health Art Gallery invites in the crowd.

The Norwich Arts Council has been something of a sanctuary for me during the past three years. I learned to mat and frame photographs there and have befriended other volunteers, looking forward to meeting new people at a monthly event in downtown Norwich called First Friday, which began in the year 2000.

The purpose of First Friday is to unite local galleries, theaters and businesses to promote local talent.

Among the three art galleries open from 6 to 9 p.m. this Friday is the Reliance Health Agency at 40 Broadway. Run by Carrie Dyer, the one-room gallery has been in existence for 11 years and displays art from members, family members and staff.

Also open on First Friday is the Wauregan gallery at 200 Main St., owned by Dan Topalis and first opened eight years ago. This tiny and popular gallery has been known to display 43 photographs of all sizes at one time.

The galleries vary in size. Although the Wauregan is small, 43 photographs were displayed in March. The Norwich Art Council at 60 Broadway, which is also open during First Friday, boasts of new floors and freshly painted walls, and Reliance Health is comfortable and welcoming.

People from all socioeconomic backgrounds and of all ages enjoy First Friday. Some hold art degrees while others come to learn. Members of the Norwich Arts Council often teach, and refreshments are always served.

While I usually migrate to the pineapple and fruit dip, others nibble on cheese and crackers, even caviar.

The galleries offer paintings, sculptures, photography and jewelry for sale or view.

Surrounded by restaurants selling sushi, Irish pub fare and New York style pizza, the galleries also aren’t far from Billy Wilson’s bar across the street from the NAC, and the Donald L. Oat Theater, which sits above it.

Because First Friday is held after hours, there is parking on the street. It is well lit and safe.

Those who make First Friday a night on the town tend to dress up, but most wear casual attire. During the summer, there is music outside of the Wauregan.

First Friday attracts folks from near and far.

Lisa Mason, a New London librarian, states that the “artwork is very selective and diverse.”

Artist and photographer Bruce Gatten of New London calls First Friday a “good reason to get together.”

    I couldn’t agree more.

Music and art mingle at the Reliance Health gallery in Norwich during First Friday. The next event is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 4.
