State police investigating shooting on Interstate 95 in East Lyme

East Lyme -- State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred late Sunday afternoon along the northbound lanes of Interstate 95, and brought traffic to a standstill.

Troopers from the Montville barracks were dispatched at 5:23 p.m. after being notified that during a disturbance an individual had been shot while traveling northbound along the highway near northbound Exit 76 in East Lyme, said police.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of what police called "non life-threatening injuries."

The incident caused delays in the northbound lanes, as the roadway had been shut temporarily to allow for medical personnel to respond. By 6:30 p.m. the highway had opened again, although traffic was proceeding at a slower pace near the scene of the shooting near the junction with Interstate 395.

Police were seen talking with a few men who wore the attire of a motorcycle club. However, the nature of those discussions was unclear.

State police said they are investigating the shooting, but "there is no threat to the public."
