On the Side: Scott's Yankee Farmer
As always, I overdo when it comes to local, fresh fruits and vegetables. Even though I am technically feeding only myself, I buy too much, make too much and freeze too much. My friends and neighbors do like this, and thus I have a reason to overdo.
Last week I bought 10 quarts of strawberries. And I bought them so gorgeous and so ripe that I spent about four or five hours hulling and slices them. I ate lots of them, but I gave more than half to friends and used much of them for making crisps and breads. I freeze the juice for not-local strawberries in April and May when I pretend it is June. I only buy them at Scott’s Yankee Farmer in East Lyme, where you can pick your own (but I don’t).
