Stonington closes Isham Street boat launch in Mystic to trailered boats

Mystic – The Town of Stonington has temporarily closed the Isham Street boat ramp to trailered boats due to its deteriorating condition.

It remains open to canoes and kayaks.

In announcing the closure, the town said “the Board of Selectmen has been advised by the town’s insurance carrier, that use of the ramp in its current state should be limited to ‘roof top boats,' i.e. canoes, kayaks and the like, to avoid possible damage to vehicles and persons while loading and unloading trailered boats.”

It stated that the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the town are conducting an assessment of the ramp.

The closure will remain in effect until the DEEP determines how “to bring the ramp back to a safe and usable condition.”

The town said it apologized for limiting access to the Mystic River during the summer months, but the partial closure was instituted to prevent injury to residents and others using the ramp.
