Spencer Christian to speak at problem-gambling conference in Mystic

Mystic — The Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling has announced that nationally known television personality Spencer Christian will be the keynote speaker Oct. 23 at the council’s 15th Annual Conference at the Hilton Mystic hotel.

Christian, who became a household name as a weatherman, feature reporter and co-host of ABC’s “Good Morning America” during the late 1970s and early ’80s, struggled with a serious gambling addiction, which he wrote about in a memoir published this spring, “You Bet Your Life: How I Survived Jim Crow Racism, Hurricane Chasing, and Gambling.”

The council, a Wethersfield-based nonprofit, focuses on preventing problem gambling and helping those who may be struggling with gambling addiction. It has yet to release information about registering for the conference.
