Endorsed candidate wins Preston Democratic primary for registrar

Preston — Endorsed candidate Karen Stockton won Tuesday’s Democratic primary for registrar of voters, defeating incumbent Cheryl Roberts 151 to 86 votes.

Stockton, 71, a political newcomer, will be on the Nov. 6 ballot as the Democratic candidate for a two-year term that will begin in January. She said she already has downloaded the state registrars’ manual and looked up classes at the University of Connecticut for the mandated training necessary for the position.

“I am thrilled,” Stockton said Tuesday night. “I had no expectation. I’m just really honored to be selected. I want to thank everyone who voted for me.”

Stockton has more than 25 years working in early intervention with children and ran an early intervention program at the American School for the Deaf for most of her career, and for a few years before she retired, she served as statewide training coordinator for children, infants and young children with disabilities, conducting training and maintaining budgets for the program.

Roberts, 57, was elected as Democratic registrar in 2016 after former Registrar Joanne Eisenhard decided not to run again.
