Casinos' August slot revenues down 1 percent; MGM Springfield reports first numbers

Southeastern Connecticut’s two casinos combined to rake in nearly $95 million in slot-machine revenue in August — slightly less than during the same month last year — and forwarded nearly $24 million of it to the state.

Meanwhile, Foxwoods’ and Mohegan Sun’s newest competition, MGM Springfield, reported slots revenue of $7.3 million for its first eight days of operation, Aug. 24-31. It also reported $2.1 million in table-games revenue, bringing its total gaming revenue for the period to nearly $9.5 million.

MGM Springfield forwarded $2.4 million of its August gaming revenue to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

“While these gaming revenue figures represent less than eight days of operations in August, they demonstrate MGM Springfield’s tremendously successful opening week, when we welcomed more than 150,000 visitors over our first weekend alone,” Mike Mathis, president and chief operating officer of MGM Springfield, said in a statement.

Mohegan Sun reported that in August it “won,” or kept, $53.3 million in slots winnings after paying out prizes, 1.1 percent less than it won in August 2017. The Mohegan Tribe-owned casino reported slots “handle” — the total amount of wagers before prizes are paid out — of $635.5 million, a decrease of less than 1 percent over the same month last year.

Foxwoods, owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, reported last week that its win for the month totaled $41.4 million, down 1.6 percent over last August. Foxwoods’ handle was down less than a percent to $518.9 million.

Mohegan Sun forwarded $13.3 million of its slots win to the state. Foxwoods forwarded $10.6 million. The Connecticut casinos are not taxed on their table-games winnings.

Over the last eight days of August, Mohegan Sun’s slots win was $14.3 million compared to Foxwoods’ $10.2 million and MGM Springfield’s $7.3 million. Mohegan Sun operated about 400 more machines than Foxwoods and more than 2,000 more than MGM Springfield.[naviga:img hspace="5" vspace="5" border="0" height="226" width="640" align="middle" alt="" src="https://projects.theday.com/charts/slot-machine-revenues-aug-24-31.png"/]

Unofficially, Mohegan Sun’s machines, over the eight days, averaged a daily win of $392. MGM Springfield’s machines averaged a daily win of $360, while Foxwoods’ machines averaged a daily win of $308.

“We have been pleased with our performance post MGM opening and continue to focus on delivering world-class service for our loyal guests,” Ray Pineault, president and general manager of Mohegan Sun, said.
