Stonington's Maranell inducted into Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame

Stonington — Former first selectman and retired Navy submariner Don Maranell was inducted into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame on Friday.

Maranell was among a group of nine people who comprised the Class of 2018 during an induction ceremony at the state Capitol.

The Hall of Fame was established in 2005 by former Gov. M. Jodi Rell to increase the awareness of the lifetime contributions of veterans after their military service ended.

After serving 20 years in the Navy and retiring as a lieutenant, Maranell served three terms from 1995 to 2001 as first selectman. He also served as a Stonington Borough burgess and two terms as warden. He has been a member of American Legion Post 58 for 35 years, serving as adjutant for five years and treasurer for three. He volunteers at the TVCCA RSVP Veterans Coffee house in Mystic which provides support for veterans. He is also a volunteer firefighter with the Stonington Borough fire department.

Maranell’s other volunteer activities include the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Walk, St. Mary’s Church Financial Advisory Committee and teaching religious education.

Other Stonington members of the Veterans Hall of Fame are current first selectman and former Congressman Rob Simmons, U.S. Army, Class of 2010; The Rev. George Kenneth Carpenter, U.S. Army, Class of 2011; and Colonel Linda S. Schwartz, U.S. Air Force, Class of 2016.
