Lamont sets Feb. 26 date for special election in New London

Gov. Ned Lamont on Friday announced that the special election for state representative in New London, along with four other elections to fill vacant seats across the state, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

In New London, a race is heating up to fill the 39th House District seat vacated by former state Rep. Chris Soto. Soto, who was elected to a second term in November but resigned on Wednesday to take a job as legislative affairs director in the Lamont administration.

Political party conventions to nominate candidates are expected to be held in the coming weeks. The 39th House District covers the first and second voting districts in the city.

As of Friday morning, Democrat Anthony Nolan, Green Party member Mirna Martinez and Democrat Jason Catala had filed campaign paperwork with the state.

Catala, a school board member, has said that in light of the public support from Democrats for Nolan, he does not plan to seek the Democratic nomination. Instead, he said he plans to petition his way onto the ballot.

Republicans also have announced they have at least two people interested in becoming candidates, Kat Goulart and Susan Gorra.

Other special elections will be held in the 3rd, 5th and 6th Senate Districts and the 99th House District.
