New London Republicans nominate Goulart for state rep seat

New London — City Republicans on Tuesday chose Kat Goulart to represent the party as a candidate for the 39th District House seat.

Goulart, 38, who is self-employed in the health and wellness industry, won more votes than fellow nominee Susan Gorra, whose family ran a department store in downtown for decades.

Goulart is expected to face three other candidates vying for the open House seat in the Feb. 26 special election. The seat was left vacant with the resignation of former Democratic state representative Chris Soto.

“We haven’t had Republican representation in decades and it hasn’t served New London well," Goulart said.

"We’re incredibly reliant on state funds and over the last few years we’ve gotten less and less assistance from the state,” Goulart said. “My conservative beliefs are key here. Connecticut is in a fiscal crisis and I don’t believe that raising taxes and implementing tolls is the way to address that.”

Goulart is a member of the city's Economic Development Commission, Police Community Relations Committee, the New London Babe Ruth League and on the board of the FBI New Haven Citizens Academy Alumni Association.
