Norwich — Athletic directors from Norwich Free Academy and Ledyard High School will be working together to reschedule the basketball game at NFA that was postponed Monday due to the potential for "friction" among spectators.

"We're working with our colleagues over at NFA to understand the situation," Ledyard Superintendent Jay Hartling. "The information we are getting is that this has to do with non school-age people in Norwich potentially being at the game and potentially having issues with the family member of a Ledyard student."

The game was scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Alumini Hall at NFA. Officials from both communities decided to cancel it out of an abundance of caution after the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Police received information and shared it with Norwich officials.

Mashantucket Tribal Police Chief William D. Dittman said he received a phone call and relayed the information to Norwich officials. He declined to discuss the specifics of the information.

Norwich Police Chief Patrick Daley said his department was informed only that it was a potential conflict among fans at the game, not anything specific regarding targets.

The postponed game, which involved the varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams, had not been rescheduled as of Tuesday afternoon, but the two teams, which are in the same division, are scheduled to play in Ledyard on Feb. 2.
