On the Side: Candy classics for Easter and Passover
Both Easter and Passovers involve candy: chocolate bunnies and jelly beans for Easter and chocolate-covered marshmallows and chocolate-covered jellies for Passover.
Our housekeeper used to give me Easter baskets, and my mother would give me pieces of halvah, a finely chopped sugar and almonds that made my little teeth ache. We all grew up with these kinds of treats (okay, not the halvah for most of us), but what I loved most of all were the orange or raspberry jellies and the Barton Almond Kisses.
I have to look at a calendar to figure out where each of these holidays begins, but a visit to a local supermarket reminded me. Last week I bought a quart of Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda and a package of chocolate jellies. I have not drunk the soda, but the candies, which I put in the freezer, are gone. Could it have been me who ate them all?
