Ledyard council approves 2019-20 budget ahead of town meeting

Ledyard —  The Town Council voted unanimously Wednesday night to send a $60 million budget to the May 20 town meeting.

The town budget, consisting of a $27,500,259 general government budget and a $32,548,569 school budget, is about a 4 percent increase over the 2018-19 budget. If approved by voters, it would reflect a 0.77-mill increase to 35.06 mills, or an additional $77 in taxes per $100,000 assessed.

The final number approved Wednesday included last-minute reductions discussed at the Finance Committee meeting earlier that night, which eliminated a health care consultant and reduced capital improvement funds.

The Finance Committee also created a new line item for a consolidated town newsletter, which would include several town departments, including Parks and Recreation, the senior center and the libraries. They reallocated money from newsletter-related line items from each department and $8,000 in additional funds to reduce printing and postage costs associated with individual publications.

The budget now will go to a town meeting at 7 p.m. May 20 at the Ledyard High School Auditorium. The meeting then will adjourn to a referendum from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 21.
