Health district: Giants Neck Heights beach has elevated bacteria levels

Ledge Light Health District announced Tuesday that all swimming areas sampled on Monday were below the bacterial levels set by the state of Connecticut except Giants Neck Heights (jetty) in East Lyme. The area will be re-sampled on Wednesday.

L&M Beach in New London has been cleared for swimming, the agency announced.

"Please be aware that rain or other contamination events occurring before the Monday morning sampling can lead to elevated bacterial counts, especially in bathing areas with storm water runoff (storm drain pipes or extensive impervious surfaces) or low water turnover (inland bathing areas)," Ledge Light Health District said. "We recommend those individuals responsible for the bathing areas take these events into consideration."

A list of beach locations is available at bit.ly/LLHDswim. People also can call (860) 448-4882 with questions.
