Stonington town committees to choose candidates on July 18

Stonington — The Democratic and Republican town committees will meet Thursday, July 18, to choose candidates to run in the November election for first selectman, Board of Selectmen and other offices.

The Democrats will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Stonington borough firehouse. The Democrats will be looking to choose a candidate to possibly challenge two-term incumbent Republican First Selectman Rob Simmons, who has not yet announced whether he will seek re-election.

The Democrats also will be looking to nominate a candidate for Board of Selectmen, as current Democratic Selectwoman Jocelyn Kepple has said she will not run after agreeing to fill the remaining term of Democrat Kate Rotella, who stepped down after being elected state representative last fall.

The Republicans are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. at the police station to select their candidates. Simmons, who has declined to discuss his plans until then, said the meeting could be adjourned until July 23 if there are more decisions to make on candidates.
