New London — The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has designated Saturday "Free Fishing License Day," and will be holding its eighth Annual Saltwater Fishing Day at Fort Trumbull State Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

To fish for free, residents and nonresidents can obtain a free one-day fishing license at bit.ly/ctfishinglicense or any venue that sells licenses. Anyone 16 or older can get the license, while those 15 or younger can register for a "Youth Fishing Passport" online.

The day "is one of DEEP's initiatives designed to connect people with outdoor activities and Connecticut's natural resources," Deputy Commissioner Susan Whalen said in a news release. "'Free Fishing License Day' reflects how fishing is much more than catching fish. For many, the quality time spent connecting with friends and family outdoors is priceless."

During the event Saturday, CT Aquatic Resources Education will have a touch tank with live marine animals and State Environmental Conservation Police will have a saltwater fish exhibit.
