Second Republican candidate drops out of Stonington school board race

Stonington — A second Republican candidate has withdrawn her name from the Board of Education race in November.

Emma C. Burnside submitted a letter to Town Clerk Cindy Ladwig, saying she was withdrawing her name from the list of Republican candidates for the board.

It is unclear how Burnside could have served on the school board, as her letter indicates she is a student at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where she said she will graduate in 2021. She added that she has decided to add another course to her heavy semester load and "felt that it would be unfair to all of those affected by decisions of the Board of Education to have the option to vote for a candidate that would be unable to devote their best effort and adequate time to the role."

Burnside and Republican Town Committee Chairman Bryan Bentz could not be reached for comment Tuesday about why Burnside was nominated if she was attending college in Texas.

Burnside had been the lone Republican candidate nominated for the school board when the town committee met last month to choose candidates. A few days later the town commitee reconvened and nominated First Selectman Rob Simmons and his wife, Heidi Simmons, as candidates for the school board. Rob Simmons has since withdrawn as a candidate. The town committee is allowed to nominate two replacement candidates for the school board seats.
