Cajun fest to liven up downtown Norwich on Saturday

Norwich — The parade of ethnic food and entertainment festivals in downtown Norwich continues Saturday with the Halfway to Mardi Gras Cajun Fest from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Franklin Street parking lot outside of These Guys Brewing.

The festival will feature live music and a large selection of Cajun food specialties for sale at various prices, including deep fried turkey, red beans and rice, gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp po’boys, fried catfish, beignets and café au lait. Admission is free.

The festival is co-sponsored by These Guys Brewing and local chef and Food Network show “Chopped” champion Ceil Vardar and her husband, Orrie. The café au lait will be provided by Craftsman Cliff’s Roasters on Broadway.

Vardar, a retired downtown Norwich restaurant owner, lived for seven years in Louisiana and fell in love with Cajun style cooking and the flavor of the culture. Cajun food remains her favorite for at-home meals.

“There’ll be continuous music, and we’re celebrating the Cajun Creole life,” Vardar said. “And famous hurricanes, sangria wine and craft beer.”

Tables and chairs will be set up for festival participants.
