Judge to hear arguments Monday for New London Green Party mayoral candidate

New London — A hearing is set for Monday in New London Superior Court for a judge to hear arguments in the case of a New London mayoral candidate suing for a spot on the November election ballot.

The Secretary of the State’s Office has barred New London Green Party mayoral candidate Frida Berrigan because of a missed Sept. 4 deadline for election-related paperwork.

While Berrigan successfully petitioned to become a candidate, the Secretary of the State’s Office never received a certified statement of endorsement from the Greens, who nominated Berrigan on Aug. 4. New London Green Party officials claim they mailed the paperwork and suggest it might have been lost by the Secretary of the State’s Office.

Attorney Daryl Justin Finizio, a former New London mayor, is representing Berrigan in the case. In his suit, Finizio notes that the law does not require the party to independently verify receipt of the letter.

Berrigan, who has continued her campaign, will face incumbent Mayor Michael Passero and Republican candidate Marty Olsen in the upcoming election.

New London Superior Court Judge Harry Calmar has set a hearing for 2 p.m. on Monday at the 70 Huntington St. courthouse.
