Mark Brown, two others to vie for Mohegan council vacancy

Mohegan — Mark Brown, who lost a bid for a seventh consecutive term on the Mohegan Tribal Council in August, is one of three final candidates for an open council seat to be filled in an upcoming special election, according to sources.

The seat became vacant when Brown’s younger brother, Kevin Brown, resigned from the council in July. Kevin Brown had stepped down as council chairman in February following an ethics investigation.

James Gessner Jr. has since been elected chairman by the council.

Mark Brown was the leading vote-getter in primary voting that concluded Saturday, narrowing a field of a dozen candidates. Ken Davison and Jay Ihloff tied for the second-most votes, said sources who asked to remain anonymous. Brown, Davison and Ihloff will compete in the general election, which will conclude Sunday Dec. 8, the sources said.

Tribal officials have declined to comment on the election.

Brown was first elected to the council in 1995 and won reelection in 2000, 2005, 2007, 2011 and 2015. He served as chairman from 2000 to 2005. Both Davison, a lawyer, and Ihloff, one of the tribe’s cultural leaders, have run for the council in the past.

The council oversees tribal government and various tribal business ventures and doubles as the management board of Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, which operates the tribe’s gaming enterprises, including Mohegan Sun.
