New London Landmarks to host talk on New London NAACP history

New London — New London Landmarks will host a talk on Dec. 3 by New London NAACP President Jean Jordan on the history of the New London NAACP.

The talk will take place between 6:30 and 7:45 p.m. at the B.P. Learned Mission at 40 Shaw St.

Jordan will discuss New London’s earlier African American organizations, the New London NAACP’s accomplishments during the civil rights era and its current activities.

“Federal legislation like the Civil Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act were effective only because at the local level, people like Reverend Albert Garvin Sr. and Linwood Bland Jr. pushed back against employers and landlords who failed to follow the law,” said Jordan in a written statement.

New London Landmarks is currently rehabilitating Bland’s former home at 23 Franklin St.

“We purchased his house in part as a way of preserving his legacy,” said Laura Natusch, executive director of New London Landmarks. “The struggle for civil rights and against racial discrimination is an important part of New London’s history, which still resonates today.”

This free program is funded by a grant from the New London Water Authority Community Fund and is sponsored by Fiddleheads Food Cooperative and Connecticut College.

Although preregistration is not required, seating is limited and attendees are strongly urged to reserve seats by emailing director@newlondonlandmarks.org.
