Ocean Community YMCA closes three branches until March 30

The Ocean Community YMCA announced Sunday afternoon that beginning at 5 p.m. it would close until March 30.

In a letter to members of its three branches in Westerly, Mystic and Wyoming, R.I., President and CEO Maureen Fitzgerald said the decision was made due to a recent update about the COVID-19 virus as well as recommendations from the national YMCA.

In recent days, the YMCA has canceled all classes and programs but had remained open for members wanting to use its exercise facilities.

Fitzgerald added that at this time the YMCA has not been contacted by local health departments regarding any suspected exposure at the branches.

“This closure will allow for deeper cleaning performed by our cleaning companies, who will use products recommended by the CDC to clean the facility.

This is an unprecedented situation and we will continue to monitor the situation hourly and be communicating to all of you with any necessary updates,” wrote Fitzgerald.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
