New London — There were some hints of normality Wednesday with Fred's Shanty opening for the season on cue, even though so much has changed as the world adjusts to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Still, there was evidence of the times even here: the eatery's outdoor dining area was taped off and signs notified customers that, like other restaurants in the state, Fred's is offering takeout meals only.

Mike Liska of Haddam stopped by on opening day. He says he works in the area and rides his bicycle every day during his lunch break. He'd had a salad for lunch Tuesday, so he decided Wednesday was going to be a burger day.

Amanda Toner also stopped by for food. She said she was furloughed from her job Tuesday and Fred's opening was a sign of better things to come.
