Waterford reopens some town recreation areas

Waterford — First Selectman Rob Brule issued an emergency order Friday reopening a number of public areas that had been closed since late March due to fears surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

In particular, Grimsey Beach, Stenger Farm Park (though not the dog park), Leary Park, Quaker Hill Green, Sportsman Club and Quaker Hill Elementary School were reopened. Within the Civic Triangle, the duck pond, War Memorial Park, Jordan Park House Historic Green (not the buildings) and Veterans Park were reopened, as well.

Brule said in a video address that he made the decision with the blessing of the director of public health. Social distancing still applies in all cases.

"Tomorrow when you wake up and the sun's out, there are areas you can go in town with your family," Brule said.

He also noted that the town is considering opening Waterford Town Beach for Memorial Day weekend, even though it doesn't usually open for the summer until mid-June. The town likely would require season passes and limit the number of cars in the parking lot.
