East Lyme — Rene Colon, 9 of East Lyme was practicing his clarinet Wednesday while perched atop the playground equipment at McCook Point Park in Niantic.

His mother, Amelia, said Rene, who is in fourth grade, decided to bring the instrument along during a trip to the playground with her, his younger brother and their dog.

Rene, who previously played the flute, said he started playing the clarinet this week with help from YouTube videos, his father and his band teacher. "I saw them play the clarinet on 'SpongeBob' and I decided to switch," he said of learning the new instrument.
