In the Galleries: Strut your stuff at the NAC

Art on display at the Norwich Arts Center. (photo submitted)

I never thought that when I began dabbling in the visual arts, I would ultimately be realizing a dream.

It did not occur to me that my drawings and photographs would be accepted in shows, and once I won honorable mention. I spend hours of my day just sketching.

I have been a member of the Norwich Art Center since 2016, and I have met the most remarkable people. These people are spirited and infinitely more talented than I am. They do not mind that I sing there or bring my violin with me when I volunteer on account of the great acoustics.

The shows taking place at the NAC began in 2000, and it is a privilege to be a part of them. Although the most recent show was cancelled because of the pandemic, entries were still accepted and submissions were judged.

The gallery offers paintings, sculptures, photography and jewelry, all for sale.

To add to the merriment, the NAC is surrounded by restaurants featuring Irish fare, New York Style pizza, and Caribbean food.

The monthly gala always includes hors d’oeuvres, prizes for artists, and music. Rita Dawley, Carol Dunn, and Sue Parish are also volunteers and gifted artists. Virginia Chase is an accomplished photographer, and Sue Kenney, a conspicuous artist and teacher, is illustrating my children’s book.

The Norwich Arts Center attracts artists from all over Connecticut and Rhode Island and is always welcoming new artists The gallery is open Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. during the coronavirus crisis.

    Lisa Shasha lives in Norwich.
