State Senate debate series kicks off Thursday, featuring 19th District candidates

The Day’s state Senate debate series begins Thursday and will feature candidates in the 19th District.

The hourlong event, streamed live on theday.com, begins at 7 p.m. The stage of the historic Garde Arts Center in New London will serve as the backdrop for the debate, which, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held without a live audience.

The debate will feature incumbent Democratic state Sen. Cathy Osten and her Republican opponent, Steve Weir. The 19th District consists of the towns of Columbia, Franklin, Hebron, Lebanon, Ledyard, Lisbon, Marlborough, Montville, Norwich and Sprague.

Day Editorial Page Editor Paul Choiniere will moderate the debate. He will be joined by 94.9 News Now radio talk show host and contributing Day columnist Lee Elci and Day Staff Writer and editorial board member Julia Bergman in questioning the candidates.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
