ShopRite has agreed to pay its union supermarket workers retroactive COVID-19 “hazard pay” for hours worked during a four-week period this summer, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union has announced.

Nearly 50,000 workers in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey will receive the pay, the union said. ShopRite stores in New London and Norwich employ members of the UCFW, Local 371.

The deal with ShopRite recognizes the risks ShopRite workers have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and provides retroactive hazard pay ahead of the holiday season that covers all hours worked between July 26 and Aug. 22, the union said. The pay will be provided in the form of lump-sum payments equal to $1 per hour for all hours worked between July 26 and Aug. 22.

The union confirmed this week that nationwide, there have been at least 109 grocery worker deaths associated with COVID-19 since the pandemic began. More than 48,000 grocery workers have been infected with or exposed to the virus.
