Thousands of Eversource customers across southeastern Connecticut lost power on Monday as high winds pummeled the region, taking down trees and power lines in some places.

Hardest hit towns as of 7 p.m. included Old Lyme, where 3,376 customers, or 61% of the town, were in the dark. Almost all of Lyme, with 1,345 customers, was without power as of 7:30 p.m. and Waterford, with 1,060 outages, also was hard hit. There were a fluctuating number of outages in towns like East Lyme, Ledyard and Montville.

Wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour and heavy rain were expected through the evening. Statewide, more than 20,000 Eversource customers were without power as of 7 p.m.

Norwich Public Utilities reported scattered power outages Monday evening, including about 186 customers out about 4 p.m. on Dupont, Bailey Heights and Scotland roads, likely caused by a blown fuse related to a tree issue on Hunters Avenue, NPU spokesman Chris Riley said. Earlier Monday afternoon, about 60 customers had lost power due to a downed tree limb on wires in the Jail Hill area, affecting Fountain, Happy, Old Division and Buckingham streets.

Road crews in Montville were contending with downed trees and wires on Oxoboxo Dam and Sharp Hill roads. State police, earlier in the evening, were at the scene of an overturned tractor trailer on the southbound side of Interstate 95, on the Baldwin Bridge, in Old Saybrook. That accident later was cleared.
