    Norwich veterans council to hold Pearl Harbor Day ceremony Monday

    Norwich — Members of the Norwich Area Veterans Council will assemble at the Freedom Plaza at City Hall at 11:48 a.m. Monday for the annual Pearl Harbor Day commemoration ceremony.

    Two Norwich residents were killed in action aboard the USS Arizona: Storekeeper 3rd Class Harry Carlson and Seaman 1st Class Michael Quarto. Members of their respective families will be in attendance.

    U.S. Navy veteran and veterans council President John Waggoner will serve as the master of ceremonies and will recount the events of Dec. 7, 1941. U.S. Navy veteran and veterans council Chaplain Marvin Serruto will give a brief talk. The Navy's Silver Dolphins also will attend and participate.

    U.S. Marine Corps veteran and council member Tom Callinan will perform the national anthem and "Remember Pearl Harbor,” a song composed by Don Reid and Sammy Kaye 10 days after war broke out in 1941.

    The ceremony is open to the public, and COVID-19 restrictions requiring masks and social distancing will be observed.
