New London Trees kicks off spring planting

New London — Jerry Elliott and Hunter Clark, with Colonel Landscaping LLC, were working on planting a black tupelo tree Wednesday in the park at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital's staff parking lot.

It was one of five planted at the location through a partnership between the hospital and New London Trees.

The nonprofit raised more than $7,000 recently through crowd funding on patronicity.com and used the money to purchase about 30 native trees to plant throughout the city this spring. Trees will be planted this week through a partnership with the City of New London in Greens Harbor, Hodges Square and along Ashcraft Road, said Maggie Redfern, one of the founders of the group.

The mission of New London Trees is to restore the city's tree population through community planting and care, education and advocacy.
