Mohegan Sun hires 70 job fair attendees

Mohegan — Mohegan Sun’s two-day job fair last week was a success, yielding 70 new employees for the casino.

“I’m happy with that,” Jeff Hamilton, the casino’s president and general manager, said Monday. “It shows that a lot of people are more comfortable coming in for interviews than going online and filling out applications. Our goal is to do more events like this over the summer.”

Hamilton said 172 people showed up at the fair — 71 on Thursday and 101 on Friday — which took place for nine hours each day in the casino's Cabaret Theatre. Seventy people have been hired, a number that could climb over the next few days, he said.

The new hires will fill jobs in culinary, food-and-beverage, security, housekeeping and other departments.

Hamilton said eight of the hires will each be paid the $2,000 sign-on bonus Mohegan Sun was offering those who qualified for culinary positions — cooks, chefs and certain other kitchen staff. Eight people hired as housekeepers will get $500 bonuses for signing on with the casino.

The culinary and housekeeping hires represent 20% of the number of employees needed to fill vacancies in those areas, according to Hamilton, who last week said the casino needed to fill a total of more than 200 openings as it prepared for the May 19 lifting of COVID-19 restrictions on Connecticut businesses.

The lifting will enable bars, restaurants and entertainment venues to operate without mandated limits on capacity.

Hamilton said Mohegan Sun likely will hold another job fair next week.
